Encouraging healthy and adventurous eating

our philosophy

Springwood acknowledges the importance of nutrition and the role that food can play in educating young students, and we take pride in the food we serve. As a licensed program we embrace our responsibility to ensure each child has the energy they need to explore the outdoors.

Our philosophy is rooted in adventurous healthy eating, gratitude for local farming, and sustainable food systems. Teachers leverage mealtimes for inclusive practices, encouraging students to try new foods, introduce stories of their own culture, and explore food cultures from around the world.

Students are provided with nut-free, vegetarian, nutritionally dense snacks each day, always including fresh fruits and vegetables, sourcing organic and local produce whenever possible. During colder months, students enjoy warm beverages like herbal tea and cocoa.

Foraging

Participating in an outdoor classroom allows us to practice reciprocity for nature, and students learn to responsibly forage, identify edible species, and utilize plants for learning projects. We cultivate appreciation for indigenous knowledge, and share the cultural significance of plant species used to nourish, heal, and sustain tribal communities, since time immemorial. This includes identifying and pronounce species in English, Spanish, and Lushootseed.
